More than half of the seriously injured road users in Sweden are cyclists. We studied how to protect the bicyclist better when car drivers attempt to overtake them, so called longitudinal same direction scenarios in the MICA2 project (Modelling Interaction between Cyclists and Automobiles 2) led by Hanna Jeppsson.

One idea was to build a prototype of an external airbag for the car side that would prevent serious head injuries. And that’s what we did – thanks to Mikael Enänger, Dobrila Lucic, Henrik Lilja, Peter Andersson and Joakim Näslund.

Not stopping there, we also wrote a conference paper about it led by Dr Jolyon Carroll. The paper got accepted and published by SAE showing the world how science and engineering at Autoliv can contribute to saving more lives and preventing more injuries.

The work has been presented at the SAE WCX World Congress Experience in Detroit, Michigan on Wednesday, April 6 at 4:30 p.m. local time (link to agenda) by Dr Benjamin Shurtz to an excited audience.
